Each
year, Girl Scouts of Santiam Council has a Nut Sale Program in the fall and the
well-known Girl Scout Cookie Sale Program in the spring.
Much more information will come out to leaders, parents and the
public at the time of the sales, but the following are a few of the
commonly asked questions and answers regarding cookies and nuts.
Q:
Do all girls sell cookies or nuts?
Is it required?
A:
Cookie and nut selling is a volunteer activity involving more than
one million girls across the country annually.
In Santiam Council, about 2,500 girls (80%) and 300 adults (30%)
participate in the sale. While
girls are not required to sell cookies or nuts, most are eager to do so.
Each girl who wants to participate must have the written consent of
her parent or guardian.
Q:
What do girls learn from these programs?
A:
For many girls, these programs are their first experience in
setting goals and working with others in a team.
Girls learn to meet and greet people, keep accurate financial
records and follow through on a promise to deliver the cookies and nuts
people ordered. Girls have
fun while building self-confidence and learning important life skills.
Q:
How do these programs relate to the mission of Girl Scouting? Why does some of the income from these programs go to the
council?
A:
These programs help girls develop self-confidence and teach
important life skills such as teamwork and goal setting.
This is an integral part of the Girl Scout mission, which is to
help girls from all segments of society realize their full potential and
become resourceful citizens.
In our council, proceeds from these programs are used to provide Girl
Scouting to over 3,089 girls and to provide training and support service
to more than 1,117 adult volunteers.
Girl
Scout councils use product sale proceeds to provide essential services to
troops, groups and individual girls.
All of the program resources, training materials and communication
support that troops, girls and adults receive come through the council
structure. Program
scholarships and special events occur throughout the year, as well as the
council camp properties and their maintenance. This keeps fees for girls and adults to a minimum and ensures
high quality, safe experience for all.
Q:
What is a program certificate?
A:
Depending on the number of boxes of cookies or cans of nuts a girl
sells, she can qualify for a program certificate equal in value to so many
cents per item sold. A girl
can use this certificate to pay for all sorts of activities and items.
For example, she can purchase a new uniform or other Girl Scout
items. She can use it to pay
for registration fees for council events, resident or day camp or even use
it for an approved troop event or trip.
Many girls in the council receive program certificates large enough
to pay for their entire session at camp or pay a large portion toward the
amount needed to take part in an extended trip to another part of the
world. Links
