Program > Program Resources > Council Patch and Ready Made Programs

Busy Beaver

Suggested level: Brownie Girl Scouts

Description: This patch encourages troops to participate in various activities and to develop basic outdoor skills.  As with all Girl Scout programming this patch requires girl programming and may take up to 10 to 12 meetings to complete.  Keep a troop chart to show progress toward the completion of the patch.

Patch requirements: the troop must complete 10 activities.

Activities:

  1. Collect leaves; observe the differences in look, shape, and feel. Make leaf prints.

  2. Make a bird feeder or house; identify different types of birds that might use it.  Talk about how you can help the birds and how birds help you.

  3. Discuss the safety rules for walking in a group.  Participate in a skit to show others that you know about these safety rules.

  4. Learn how to dress for different outdoor activities and weather.  Have a style show demonstrating different ways to be prepared for each season.

  5. Take a walk and then talk about what you observed during the walk.

  6. Tell each other what your favorite wild animal is and why.  Draw a picture or make up a story about the animal to share.  Or act our characteristics of your favorite animal for others to guess.

  7. Learn simple first aid for burns and cuts.  Make a troop first aid kit.  Learn what to do if you become lost.

  8. Learn how to tie a square knot and an overhand knot and know how to use them.  Have a knot tying relay.

  9. Find out what foods are good to take on a hike.  Plan and prepare a sack lunch or snack for an outdoor meeting.

  10. Discuss good outdoor manners and list ways you can protect the natural world.

  11. Plan and have a cookout in a park or someone's backyard.

  12. Find out where Camp Whispering Winds is located and mark it on a map.  Learn what activities you can do there during different seasons.  Have someone who knows the camp come to a meeting and tell about the camp or plan to visit camp as a troop.
