Scouting Out Music
Suggested level: all levels
Description: This
patch will give girls a greater appreciation of music and musical instruments as
well as knowledge of their local music organizations.
Patch requirements:
To earn the patch, your troop must participate in six of the activities listed
below. The three starred activities are required. This may take 10 to 15
meetings to complete.
Activities:
-
Attend a music rehearsal. Some
communities have a local orchestra or band that holds practices on Saturdays or
evenings.
-
Take a tour of a local music store and
with the help of a store employee look at the different instruments. Be sure to
contact the store ahead of time to arrange the visit.
-
*Attend two concerts, prepare for the
concerts by: learning the backgrounds of the artists and music and investigate
proper concert etiquette. After the concert: talk about what you liked or did
not like and what things made you feel the way you did.
-
Be able to name four classical composers
and two popular musicians. Listen to the music of two of the classical composers
and compare each style and talk about how you felt about each.
-
*Know the difference between a quartet,
band, orchestra, and symphony. If possible, listen to each type of group play,
either live or by recording.
-
Perform at least one service project for
your local music organization.
-
Learn the difference between an
overture, a concerto, and a symphony. Listen to each type of music either in
person or by a recording.
-
*After attending a musical event, decide
what instrument you would like most to play. Bring the instrument or drawing or
a record of the instrument to your troop meeting and tell why you chose that
instrument.
-
Invite a person who plays an instrument
to a troop meeting and have them tell about their instrument and play it for
you.
